It seems extraordinary now, when even Miss America is calling a day on its swimsuit pageants, to build an entire industry around a woman sporting a lycra tunic. ![]() In fact, the closest they’ve come is this week’s fish out of water drama Swimming With Men – and for all Thomas Turgoose’s splendid qualities, they aren’t going to beat Williams diving 50ft off a platform surrounded by beaming chorines. ![]() Fred Astaire had Gene Kelly, even Donald Duck had Daffy, but Williams remains the only Hollywood star never to have a challenger. She was teased, rather unfairly, for not being able to sing, dance or act, yet there was nobody like her. "If they ever teach a duck to act, I'm in big trouble," quipped Esther Williams, the professional swimmer-turned-actress who was nicknamed the Million Dollar Mermaid for her hugely successful roles in MGM’s “aquamusicals” of the 1940s and 1950s. ![]()
